"The Magic of Toned Paper" Workshop

 Urban Sketchers Wilmington NC

will host

Pat Southern-Pearce, renown Manchester, England artist & Urban Sketcher.

"The Magic of Toned Paper"

 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,

Thursday & Friday, September 26 & 27, 2024.

ABOUT PAT:

Born and raised in the North of England and trained as a painter, Southern-Pearce is known for her calligraphic works on toned paper, her skies, her sense of place, and for sketching in carparks.

Alongside her work with sketchers and schools in the United Kingdom, she travels the world teaching workshops and has tutored at Manchester, Chicago and Amsterdam symposiums. She displayed sketches at exhibitions in Venice in 2017 and 2018, and before that in Moscow. Area artists will not want to miss her visit to Wilmington, North Carolina's historic, coastal and Riverwalk city of Live Oaks & Spanish Moss.

WORKSHOP BASICS:

Working freely and treating sketches like paintings, she begins with shapes against the sky and the sky itself when it changes and inspires. A sense of place is crucial to all her sketches, capturing the feel of somewhere, the atmosphere, the time of day, the weather. Her United States workshops are all about this: on toned paper, using watercolor pencils and crayons (without water), and delight of other drawing materials.

This workshop is a gradual build-up of skills, storytelling, recording color, atmosphere and text. Participants will develop skills gradually, collect details in flexible thumbnails, and work on quality of line, expressive skies, adding glow (and a sense of distance), negative space, less is more, and sketching like a painter.

For more information about Pat Southern-Pearce and to get a feel for her art and teaching style, go her Facebook page and do an online search of her work.

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

All sessions will take place within Wilmington's Historic and Riverwalk area. Pat's workshop will include Pat demonstrating and students sketching at outdoor sites.

Downtown Wilmington is steeped in history, filled with attractions, and offers all the enticing restaurants and shops of a major city, while retaining its small-town coastal charm.

Spanning 300 city blocks, and recognized as one of the largest downtown communities of its kind, visitors will find plenty of ways to hit the cobblestone streets and enjoy the distinctive culture, history and entertainment along Wilmington's riverfront and downtown. Enjoy walking tours, horse drawn carriage rides and visit USS Battleship North Carolina.
